23. What did Moshe do about the bitter water?
A. He cried to Adonai and he showed him a specific type of wood to put in the water which took away the bitterness

Note on what kind of wood this could have been.

This wood was called Alvah by the Mahometans, who maintain that Moses had received a 5мссе of it, by succession, from the patriarchs, Noah
laving kept it in the ark, and delivered it to his posterity. (D'HerlHot, Bibl.
Orient, p. 105, col. I. et p. Iftij. col. I.) The word alúa has some relation
to aloes, which is a very hitter wood ; and some interpreters have hinted,
that Moses took a very bitter sort of wood, on purpose that the power
of God might be the more remarkable, in sweetening these waters.
Josephiis says, that this legislator used the wood which lie found by
chance, lying at his feet. [See more on this subject under the article
EXODUS. R. That other water also stands in need of correction, and that
such correction is applied to it, appears from a custom in Egypt, in
respect to the water of the Nile; a custom which, being of great
autiquily, might have been familiar to Moses. "The water of the Nile is
always somewhat muddy ; but by rubbing with bitter almonds, prepared in
a particular majnix-r, the earthen jars in which it is kept, this water
is rendered pure"

ALMUG TREE, a certain kind of wood, mentioned 1 Kings, x, 11 ; 2 Chron. ii, 8; ix, 10,11. Jerom and the Vulgate render it, ligna r/ii/iinr, and the Septuagint fiXa KrXt«ijrù, wrought wood. Several critics understand it to mean gvmmy wood; but a wood abounding in resin must be very unfit for the
uses to which this is said to be applied. Celsus queries if it be not
the sandal ; but Michaelis thinks the particular species of wood to be
wholly unknown to us. Dr. Shaw supposes that the almug tree was the
cypress; and he observes that the wood of this tree is still used in
Italy and other places for violins, harpsichords, and other stringed
instruments. ALOE, -V7JJ, a plant with broad leaves, nearly two inches
thick, prickly and serrated. It grows about two feet high. A very
bitter gum is extracted from it, used for medicinal purposes, and
anciently for embalming dead bodies. Nicodemus is said, John xix, 39,
to have brought one hundred pounds' weight of myrrh and aloes to embalm
the body of Jesus. The quantity has been exclaimed against by certain
Jews, as being enough for fifty bodies. But instead of ixarbr it might
originally have been written ¿Ixaror, ten pounds' weight. However, at
the funeral of Herod there were five hundred
ipu/iaTftjiopes, spice bearers ; and at that of R. Gamaliel, eighty pounds of
opobalsamum were used. The wood which God showed Moses, that with it he might sweeten the waters of Marah, is called alvah, Exod. xv, 25. The word has some relation to aloe ; and some interpreters are of opinion that
Moses used a bitter sort of wood, that so the power of God might be the
more remarkable. Mr. Bruce mentions a town, or large village, by the
nameofElvah. It is thickly planted with trees ; is the oasis parra of
the ancients; and the last inhabited place to the west that is under
the jurisdiction of Egypt. He also observes that the Arabs call a shrub
or tree, not unlike our hawthorn, either in wood or flower, by the name
of elvah. " It was this," say they, "with which Moses sweetened the
waters of Marah; and with this, too, did Kalib Ibn el \Valid sweeten
those of Elvah, once bitter, and give the place the name of this
circumstance." It may be that God directed Moses to the very wood
proper for the purpose. M. Nci- buhr, when in these parts, inquired
after wood capable of this eflect, but could gain no information of any
such. It will not, however, from hence follow that Moses really used a
bitter wood ; but, as Providence usually works by the
proper and fit means to accomplish its ends, it seems likely that the wood he made use of was, in some degree at least, corrective of that quality which abounded in the water, and to rendered it potable. This seems to have
been the opinion of the author of Ecclesiasticus, xxxviii, 5. That
other water, also, requires some correction, and that such a correction
is applied to it, appears from the custom in Egypt in respect to that
of the Nile, which, though somewhat muddy, is rendered pure and
salutary by being put into jars, the inside of which is rubbed with a
paste made of bitter almonds. The first discoverers of the Floridas are
said to have corrected the stagnant and fetid water they found there,
by infusing in it branches of sassafras ; and it is understood that the
first inducement of the Chinese to the general use of tea, was to
correct the water of their ponds and rivers.

24.What happened there at Marah besides the waters being made drinkable?
A.Adonai made laws there and rules of life for them and tested them. If
they obeyed them, he promised not to put upon them the plaques he put
on the Egyptians.

25. They traveled on from there and arrived at the seen or Sin desert on what day?
A.The 15th day of the second month so were traveling for one month

would have been the second first day of unleavened bread for anyone who
couldn’t celebrate the Passover ( later given at Sinai)

A. They murmured or grumbled against Moshe and Aaron, that they took them away from Egypt and an abundance of food ( the flesh pots or pots of
cooking meat) to starve in the desert

27. what did Moshe do about it?
A. Adonai told him he would make bread rain down from heaven and gave him regulations about how to gather it

28. What kind of test from Adonai was this?
A. To see if the people would obey his Torah. We are to go to him every
day for our needs, to be constantly dependant on him and to lean on him
and involve him in all our ways ( prov 3:4-5)

29. What does Yeshua tell his disciples that refers back to this time?

A. It reverted to an omer either way

32 What did they say when they saw it?
A. They exclaimed Nam hu? which meand 'what is it?'

33 What else did Adonai promise to supply for them then?
A. Meat, the quail came that night and the manna in the morning

34.Moshe told them that their complaints weren’t against he and Aaron but
against G-d himself. So the L-RD told him to draw them together and
what happened?
A. They saw the glory of the L-RD appear in the desert in a cloud.

35. What was the first commandment that they broke?
A. They tried to gather manna on Shabbat

36. Why do you think this was the first commandment we see after the regulations for Passover? Why Passover first?
A. Discussion ( beginning of plan of Salvation)

37. They traveled on and complained against Moshe again about the same thing what was it?
A. No water

38. What did Moshe do this time?
A. The L-RD told him to use the staff he struck the river with and to strike the rock in Horev

39. What was the name of the place?
A.. Massah which means testing and M’rivah which means quarreling

40 Their first battle occurred after this, what happened and who was it with?
A.Amelek came out to fight Israel at Refidim. We see the first mention of
Yehoshua here as Moshe chooses him to head up the army.

41 What did Moshe do with his rod?
A. Held it up on top of the hill – called G-ds staff here

42 who helped Moshe hold up his hands?
A. Hur and Aaron

43 Who defeated Amelek?
A. Yehoshua

44 What did Adonai tell Moshe to write?
A. Write this in a book to be remembered, and tell it to Y’hoshua, I will
completely blot out any memory of Amelek from under heaven.

45 Moshe built an altar to memorialize this, what did he call it, what does it mean Adonai Nissi, the L-Rd is my banner ‘Because their hand was against the throne of Yah, Adonai will fight Amelek generation to generation.’
